The Soviet invasion totally liquidated the dream of democracy in then Czechoslovakia, Fico said. To mark today's 40th anniversary of the invasion by Warsaw Pact armies, Topolanek and Fico met in Prague, while the presidents of the two countries, Ivan Gasparovic and Vaclav Klaus, commemorated it in Bratislava. Klaus and Gasparovic agreed that the invasion definitively showed the tragedy and irrationality of the communist regime. Topolanek and Fico laid wreaths to the tomb of Marie Charouskova, a 26-year old student and mother shot dead by a Russian soldier on August 26, 1968.
