Only 19 of the 175 passengers and crew survived the crash, and some are in a critical condition. There are reports that the Spanair jet, destined for Las Palmas on the Canary Islands, had aborted an earlier take-off attempt due to a mechanical failure. Spanish media have reported that one of the plane's two engines caught fire before it crashed.
