Officials in Georgia say Russian troops have begun pulling out of the town of Gori, some 70 kilometres from the capital, Tbilisi. However, western journalists on the scene reported hearing sustained artillery fire on Thursday, when they were stopped at a Russian checkpoint.
Eye-witnesses in the city of Poti on the Black Sea also reported that Russian tanks had entered the port, a claim that Moscow denied.
