Iraqi forces backed by US troops have launched a new military offensive in the northeast of the country, one of the last main bastions of al-Qaeda.
An Iraqi military spokesman said the operation began in Diyala which included raids in the provincial capital of Baquba. Earlier this month, the US military said a force of 30,000 Iraqi soldiers and police were amassing in Diyala, an area where insurgents regularly carry out attacks. There has been no word on casualty figures during the military operation.
