A touch of the history
The base stone of the President Hotel was set in 1928 by decision of the Czech Association of Engineers and Architects (SIA) to build up a representative seat of their organisation. The new building bore the features of the new born functionalism and also some traces of the cubism.
After 50 years,in 1978, the communist bosses chose the attractive place next to SIA building for their imposing project of the hotel to host their late night discussions. Immediately after the Budovatel hotel was finished, it was joined with the original SIA building.
In 1984, the building got a new face. Mr. Karel Filsak, author of many significant buildings such as new terminal of Ruzyne airport(1) or the Intercontinental Hotel, rebuilt the hotel in the style typical of the communist regime period, the so-called monolitic style.
Floods and reconstruction
In 2002 during the destructive floods which stroke also the center of Prague and caused vast damage, the President Hotel was heavily affected and had to be closed.
The following year was dedicated to long discussions on damages with the insurance company and planning of the total refurbishment.
Finally, the refurbishment was started on 1st of August, 2003, according to the project of Guillermo Olivares and Bohumil Brabec, with the advice of architect Mr. Ivo Nahalka who was responsible for the design of interiors and decoration, and was completed on 6th of August, 2004.
